1st Photo Scavenger Hunt is a success!

Students flocked to the Melville Library this past Wednesday to participate in our 1st Annual Scavenger Hunt for a chance to win prizes!

The hunt, designed to familiarize students with the various branches and services that comprise the Stony Brook University Libraries, drew a large number of students, both individually and as previously formed teams, to test their skills at mastering numerous riddles and clues that led them through the Library on a mission to gain a better appreciation for all we have to offer.

In Gregory La Cava’s 1936 hit movie My Man Godfrey, it is said that “a scavenger hunt is exactly like a treasure hunt, except in a treasure hunt you try to find something you want and in a scavenger hunt, you try to find something that nobody wants.”  Perhaps it is therefor appropriate that we, in an academic library, decided to host our very first  scavenger hunt.  In the age of Google and Wikipedia, many students (sadly) fail to see the library as a scholarly necessity and don’t always opt to enter. It is our hope that with such fun and informative outreach events we can draw more students in to educate them and provide a new-found enthusiasm for our plentiful services.  With any luck, we will be renaming this event The Library Photo Treasure Hunt next year, as students learn to perceive us more as a more valuable part of their college experience.
