Information Commons - Health Sciences Library
The Information Commons is a collaborative, technology-enhanced learning and research environment. For information call 444-3099.
Surrounded by the most comprehensive repository of print and digital information resources on east campus, it draws together students, faculty, staff, librarians, instructional designers, and other key stakeholders. The Information Commons model is represented as three layers: physical, virtual, and support. On the physical layer, the Information Commons offers:
* twelve workstations with collaborative seating to facilitate team-oriented projects
* a reference desk for one-on-one guidance in research skills and Web resources
* dynamic electronic resources to encourage active learning
* multimedia production applications for students and faculty to develop their electronic portfolios and to create “born digital” works of scholarship.
Within the virtual layer, it plays host to cooperative learning communities, online communication tools, and interconnected Web courses, databases, and digital library resources. The support layer is both the foundation and the infrastructure behind the model. It is primarily composed of diverse people with a passion for service: librarians and library technology staff. By blending these layers, it provides active learning spaces for users to explore new electronic resources and encourage the production of media-savvy projects.
